Artist: Starvine

A Journey of Healing, Growth, and Music

Starvine is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and unapologetic romantic who wears her heart on her sleeve. Hailing from Wollongong, Australia, she’s no stranger to the raw, cathartic power of music. After spending nearly three decades as a drummer in punk, rock, and psych bands, she hit the reset button—physically, emotionally, and creatively. Following a mental health breakdown that turned her world upside down, she took a step back, embraced personal healing, and learned to find joy in life’s simple, mundane moments.

In 2023, after being assessed as autistic, Starvine reflected on the mask she had worn since joining the rock ’n’ roll scene at just 13. “I realised I’d relied on alcohol to be social and to suppress my emotions,” she says. Over the past few years, she has embraced a more wholesome lifestyle, transforming her relationship with alcohol and learning to process emotions and communicate her boundaries and needs. Letting go of the “cool rock chick” persona, she realised performing live wasn’t where her true passion lay. “I’ve found my joy in recording, being in the studio, and crafting compositions—being able to fully immerse myself in a project. That’s where I thrive.” For now, Starvine has no plans to perform live, focusing instead on creating music.

Now, as Starvine, she’s stepping into a new era, pouring her soul into her upcoming solo album We’re Alone… For Now (2025). Written, performed, mixed, and mastered entirely herself in her home studio, the album marks a bold new beginning: one of self-discovery, growth, and optimism. “Recording this album was me shedding an old skin,” she says. “The majority of the early songs I wrote didn’t make the cut, but they were necessary to release emotions I needed to process. What stayed reflects me now: a person who is lighter, happier, full of dreams—but also someone who can hold space for grief.”

The album spans a range of moods and styles: from the introspective, minimalist folk of Where Are You, My Love?—a one-minute piano and accordion ballad about searching for a soulmate—to the exuberant, joy-filled anthem We Are Free, a track that’s sure to become a queer summer playlist staple. Then there’s Dance With Me, a cosmic pop tune that vibrates with infectious energy. But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows: Replaceable, a song written earlier in her career but only now properly recorded, captures a darker, more vulnerable side—a raw expression of the personal growth that’s marked her journey.

At its core, We’re Alone… For Now is an album about love, life, and the transformative power of living in the present moment. Starvine’s lyrics may lean into the cheesy side of romance, but she doesn’t shy away from the complicated emotions that accompany it. “I guess I’m just a hopeless romantic,” she laughs. “But in the end, it’s about embracing who I am now: a person who has learned to heal, to dream again, and to find beauty in the simple things—like a good song, a good dance, and a delicious juicy mango.”

Starvine’s music is an invitation to feel deeply, to dance without hesitation, and to remember that even in our quietest, loneliest moments, we’re never truly alone.

If you are wondering what the album sounds like, mix Tiny Ruins, Ladyhawke, Veruca Salt and Fugazi together…. somehow Starvine has made that work.
